Salmon Dissection

During salmon dissections, NREP staff visit your classroom with a salmon donated by the Nisqually Indian Tribe. As we dissect the fish under a document camera, students examine the external and internal anatomy of a salmon to learn how its body systems support its life cycle. By observing features like gills, fins, eggs or milt, organs, and muscle structure, participants gain a deeper understanding of the salmon’s adaptations, and the challenges these fish face in freshwater and marine environments.

Pre-visit Resources

This is the worksheet we will use during the dissection. If you’d like to show your students what the dissection will be like, you can show them this video of our staff dissecting a salmon.

This awesome video from Long Live the Kings shows the external anatomy of the salmon.
