Water quality monitoring field trips are still going strong this fall and the NREP team had a great time testing with students from Cougar Mountain Middle School’s Science Club! From pH, turbidity, and nitrates to dissolved oxygen and stream bugs; these tests help students learn about the health of our environment today while collecting data that can help us understand what our waters will look like in the future! Thanks @cmms.cougs

The 34th Annual Nisqually Watershed Festival was a success last month with over 1,100 community members joining to celebrate the culture, environment, and history that makes Nisqually such a vibrant and beautiful place! We had a wonderful time with you all as we watched the Nisqually Indian Tribe Canoe Family perform, sat in on salmon and dogfish dissections, recognized local student artists, ate delicious barbequed salmon and fair food, created salmon prints and t-shirts, learned about the local ecology through an interactive clown show, and so much more!

The festival has always served as a place for people to gather and learn about our unique watershed and we can't thank all of our partners and exhibitors enough for making this event happen! Hopefully you made some great memories and we can't wait to see you all again next year!

Nisqually Stream Stewards and organizational partners went on tours of the Nisqually Watershed this past week to see everything our beautiful backyard has to offer from the shores of the Puget Sound all the way to the start of the river at Nisqually Glacier in Mount Rainier National Park! We learned about conservation work in the Ohop, the history of Alder Lake Dam, and how our community is working along the 78-miles of river to help restore and protect this unique and wonderful place! Contact us today at info@nisquallyriver.org to learn how you can get involved in the watershed!

Earlier this summer, Nisqually River Foundation staff were able to join a tour of the Nisqually Community Forest to see the Nisqually Indian Tribe’s newly purchased forest lands! The Community Forest is currently working with the Tribe on management strategies with the hopes that all 5,500 acres combined can become a full fledged sustainable working forest supporting our local community and the environment!

This summer the Nisqually River Council met for their Annual Retreat and after a long and productive meeting, staff helped council members perform a beach seine on the shores of the Nisqually Reach! Activities like these help introduce citizen science and an appreciation for our environment to students and community member alike! The catch for the day included sculpin, shiner perch, crabs, shrimp, and even flounder - all of which were returned safely to the Puget Sound!

Nisqually Stream Stewards visited the Nisqually Reach this past weekend to learn how light trap monitoring is helping Tribes and environmental agencies predict future Dungeness crab populations in the Puget Sound! By looking at the current crab larvae present in our waters, an estimate can be made as to what numbers will look like in four years as work continues to restore this fishery. Our stream stewards pulled two traps, looked at a variety of larvae, and learned from local experts how this data is being collected!

Earlier this Spring the NREP held its first ever clam dig cookout with students from Wa He Lut Indian School! 6th & 7th graders spent the day digging for clams, learning about traditional methods for harvesting, drinking tea made from native plants, bird watching, making shell necklaces, and of course cooking and eating clams! To learn more about this trip and how we’re working to bring ecological knowledge to students through outdoor experiences check out the blog post in our bio!
