Chum Salmon are returning to the Puget Sound! As t Chum Salmon are returning to the Puget Sound! As the fall runs begin to make their way back to the rivers and tributaries where they will spawn, the NREP is getting ready to bring students out to witness this incredible phenomenon which simultaneously marks the beginning and end of the Salmon lifecycle!

These Chum will work their way upstream to find calmer waters wherein the female salmon will use their tales to create small depressions in the gravel called redds. As the females release their eggs, the males will compete to cover these eggs with their milt before the females eventually cover the redds with gravel.

After the spawning process is complete, both male and female salmon will die therein spreading nutrients they accumulated at sea throughout the watershed. It may seem sad, but it’s all the natural circle of life that keeps our environments happy and healthy!

Meet the Nisqually River Education Project (NREP)! Meet the Nisqually River Education Project (NREP)! Our environmental educators have been out planting with students, rain or shine, every day of the week this month as we work to get over 2300 trees, shrubs, and bushes planted in the Ohop Valley. These field trips are an excellent way for students to gain hands-on restoration experience while learning how their actions can impact the health of Salmon and other creatures in the Nisqually Watershed.

Time flies when you’re planting trees! So far th Time flies when you’re planting trees! So far this year over 650 students from around the watershed have come out and planted trees, shrubs, and bushes with the Nisqually River Education Project! These field trips help kids form connections between the science concepts they’re learning in the classroom and the real world restoration efforts happening in their local environments.

We’re on track to bring out a record number of students this year and as the NREP continues to grow, we want to make sure every student has access to quality hands-on outdoor learning. Help us continue this work and donate to our Give Local campaign today - link in bio!

This fall our community came out to celebrate the This fall our community came out to celebrate the unique wonders of the watershed at the 35th Annual Nisqually Watershed Festival! Each year, on the last Saturday of September, we share our love for the environment with this free event at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge that brings together hands-on education, local performances, and environmental non-profits. The festival was a flurry of activity with the Nisqually Indian Tribe Canoe Family performing traditional songs, The Falconer providing raptor education and encounters, the salmon barbecue making sure everyone was well fed, and so many more incredible exhibitors. We had fish dissections, salmon printing and painting, an insect extravaganza, samba dancing, plenty of arts and crafts, and as much fair food as you can eat! Thank you to everyone who made this event possible, we’re already counting down the days until we can celebrate with you again in 2025!

The tour took us from the mouth of the Nisqually river at Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge all the way to the headwaters of the river at the Nisqually glacier in Mount Rainier National Park! Stream stewards traveled all day, stopping along the way to explore and learn about the region and the restoration and conservation work being done to keep our watershed healthy and thriving.

October is hatchery field trip season for the Nisq October is hatchery field trip season for the Nisqually River Education Project and we love getting students out for a day of hands-on learning! This year, over the course of one week, more than 40 students from North Thurston High School met with the Nisqually Indian Tribe’s staff at Clear Creek Hatchery to learn all about salmon biology, current recovery practices, and what it’s like to work at a salmon hatchery.

Experiences like these give youth insight into environmental restoration processes while also giving them experience working alongside natural resource professionals. Thank you to the @nisquallytribe for being such great partners in educating tomorrow’s stewards!
